Enhancing Mental Wellness: The Role of Non-Pharmacologic Interventions in Long-term Care
OnlineThis presentation will explore the crucial role non-pharmacologic interventions play in managing mental health concerns among residents in long-term care facilities, particularly in addressing insomnia and behavioral issues in the geriatric population. While psychotropic medications can be beneficial for certain conditions, they also carry significant risks, especially in elderly patients who may be more vulnerable to side effects and adverse events. Psychotropic medication risks will be discussed and how the development of person-centered care strategies can improve mental health outcomes and reduce reliance on psychotropic medications. Attendees will learn about a variety of effective non-pharmacologic approaches, including environmental modifications, cognitive therapies, sleep hygiene practices, and social engagement techniques. This session will highlight how these interventions can help manage symptoms, reduce the frequency of PRN (as-needed) medication requests, and decrease emergency hospitalizations, ultimately contributing to improved quality of life for residents.
